Members come to the University of Oregon’s Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) program with varied professional backgrounds and this diversity strengthens the program. Each year, a significant number of members are Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs). However, you do not need to be an RPCV to participate in RARE.
RARE was founded in 1994 by faculty member David Povey, an RPCV who served in the Philippines.
RPCVs are given special consideration for admission to RARE as we believe RPCVs bring valuable experience and skills to the program. RARE alum may chose to apply for admission to the University of Oregon’s Planning Public Policy and Management (PPPM) Graduate Program however, this is not a requirement for participation in RARE. While funding is not guaranteed, RARE staff will aid all members in locating funding, should they be accepted into the PPPM program. Since 1994, the RARE program has graduated well over 100 RPCVs, many of whom have chosen to stay on in Oregon to study and to work.
