A Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP) forms the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. It creates a framework for risk-based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters.

Jurisdictions with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved mitigation plans are eligible for federal grant funding to implement those mitigation items identified in the plan. However, jurisdictions are required to review, update, and re-seek FEMA approval of their plans every five years in order to maintain grant eligibility.

In 2010, OPDR will work with communities in Region 3 to assist them in reviewing and updating their natural hazards mitigation plans to meet FEMA's requirements. OPDR will conduct a plan update training series for all interested Region 3 communities, and will assist Marion and Benton counties with updating their mitigation plans. Specific project details are described below. 

 

Regional Plan Update Trainings

OPDR will host a series of four trainings in Benton, Linn, and Marion Counties.  Trainings equip communities with the tools and resources needed to update natural hazards mitigation plans. Trainings will cover the following topics:

1) Kickoff Event: Getting Your Community Organized: January 28

2) Risk Assessment Review and Update: March 5

3) Mitigation Strategy Review and Update: April 14

4) Plan Implementation & Maintenance Review and Update: May 5.
